How to squeeze more exercise into your day

After the recent blogs, we have pushed the notion of ‘use it or lose it’ so here are a few easy ways suggested by Lisa Vernon to get more exercise into your day, particularly if you are time-poor.

  1. take the stairs (assuming you need to go up or down a level)
  2. if you are taking public transport, get off at an earlier stop
  3. if you drive, park further away from the shops or your office (if you don’t get a rockstar carpark, it doesn’t matter)
  4. walk the longer route to your destination
  5. at work if there are two toilet blocks, walk to the one further away (bladder permitting)
  6. keep a drink bottle in the fridge and walk to get it when you are thirsty
  7. at home before you sit on the couch or dining chair- stand up and sit down (squat) a few times first
  8. in the ad breaks of a TV show, walk up and down the hallway, or walk on the spot
  9. while watching TV, adjust the volume or channel by getting up and changing it on the TV itself instead of using the remote
  10. while sitting, straighten your legs out one at a time (a little bit of quads work)
  11. if you are waiting for something to print, or waiting for the kettle to boil, or waiting for your bail application to be completed, rise up on to the balls of your feet and back down (a little bit of calf work)
  12. stand and walk around while you are on the phone (unless your phone has a cord)

Exercise is a valuable treatment for almost any medical condition, not limited to just musculoskeletal conditions. And if there is a condition that it is contraindicated for, I've yet to hear of it!
